Palliative care is a specialized form of medical and nursing treatment for people with a serious and incurable illness. The focus is not on healing, but on relieving distressing symptoms. The goal is to provide the best possible quality of life for the affected individuals and their families and loved ones. Palliative care for people with dementia addresses various specific questions: When is palliative care actually beneficial? What role do pain management and psychosocial support play? Or how can one talk to people with advanced dementia about their wishes and needs?
Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Ostgathe leads the Palliative Care Department at the University Hospital Erlangen and holds the Chair of Palliative Care at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He served as President of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) for several years and was Vice President of the German Association for Palliative Care (DGP). The specialist in anesthesiology, palliative care, and specialized pain therapy will discuss the various challenges in the palliative care of people with dementia and present innovative approaches for patient-centered care in dementia in the upcoming webinar.
