Dementia screening

Background:

Dementia diseases are still being underdiagnosed. According to a German study, 60 percent of people with dementia live without a confirmed diagnosis. (Eichler et al.). At the same time, the diagnosis of dementia is usually made very late and often only when symptoms are advanced. However, for people with cognitive impairments and their partners and relatives, it is of great importance to have certainty early on.

Therefore, the Bavarian Digital Dementia Register (digiDEM Bayern), together with research partners and project assistants in all 7 administrative districts of Bavaria, conducts so-called dementia screening days. The free and low-threshold testing offer is aimed at people aged 65 and over who have noticed a decline in their memory themselves, or in whom close individuals have noticed a decline in their cognitive abilities. While the screening test does not replace a comprehensive medical diagnosis, it does provide initial indications as to whether further clarification is necessary and advisable.
