Hörverlust als Risikofaktor für Demenz

Hearing loss as a risk factor for dementia

Age-related hearing loss is a widespread symptom – about a third of all affected individuals are at least 65 years old. However, only a few people with hearing loss use a hearing aid. Untreated hearing loss not only impairs daily life and can thus limit quality of life, but is also associated with other health problems such as the development of dementia. But why do people with untreated hearing loss have an increased risk of dementia? What medical and psychosocial factors play a role in this?

Prof. Dr. med. Jan Löhler is President of the German Professional Association of Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctors (Deutscher Berufsverband der Hals-Nasen-Ohrenärzte e.V.) and led the Scientific Institute for Applied ENT Medicine there for many years. Due to his extensive research in audiology and neurotology, he was awarded the title of associate professor (apl. Professor) by the University of Lübeck in 2023. Furthermore, the specialist in ear, nose, and throat medicine practices in his ENT clinic in Schleswig-Holstein. In the webinar, Prof. Dr. Jan Löhler will discuss the (early) detection and treatment of age-related hearing loss. He will also explain how hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia.
