Digital technologies are opening up new possibilities in therapeutic work with older people, particularly in memory work. Through life story-oriented conversations, personal memories can be evoked using images, videos, and objects. This can promote mental activity and enhance the well-being of people with memory impairments. Such approaches are typically used in professional care and therapy settings. Within this context, it's also referred to as reminisce therapy or reminiscence therapy. The S3 Guideline for Dementias already recommends reminiscence therapy for treating depressive symptoms and for cognitive stimulation in people with dementia. But how can this therapeutic approach be implemented digitally?
In the research project „Biographical Work in Senior Care Facilities with Tablet Support to Improve Quality of Life and Communication – BaSeTaLK,“ researchers developed and tested a tablet-supported app for biographical work with the elderly in care facilities. The application of this approach was evaluated with older adults in care facilities by trained volunteers. Following successful implementation, the app was transferred into a web app, which is available free of charge.https://www.basetalk.de/However, it is also conceivable that therapists could use the app. Although the app has not yet been specifically tested for people with dementia, it still has potential for future dementia care.
Prof. Dr. rer. medic. Norina Lauer is a Professor of Speech Therapy at OTH Regensburg and led the research project BaSeTaLK there. As a member of the Regensburg Center of Health Sciences and Technology (RCHST), she primarily conducts research in the field of digitalization in speech therapy. In the upcoming webinar, Prof. Dr. Lauer will provide insights into the ‚BaSeTaLK‘ project and describe the digital approach to biographical work.
