Even before dementia occurs, early traces of biological changes in the brain can be sought. These include, for example, protein deposits known as beta-amyloid proteins. These can be detected using cerebrospinal fluid examinations or special imaging techniques. Can these findings lead to reliable conclusions about the development of later dementia? If so, are there medications that actually work for this?
Scientific publications report on various advantages and disadvantages of early Alzheimer's diagnostics. For example, affected individuals have the opportunity to arrange their future care early, independently, and self-determinedly. However, early diagnosis can also lead to emotional distress and stigmatization – both for those affected and for their caregivers and relatives.
Physician and health services researcher Prof. Dr. med. Elmar Gräßel is the head of the Center for Medical Supply Research at the University Hospital Erlangen and one of the project leaders of digiDEM Bavaria. Based on current scientific knowledge, he will present the advantages and disadvantages of early Alzheimer's diagnosis in an upcoming webinar and highlight the importance of these arguments for individual decision-making – for or against early diagnosis. The lecture also includes a scientific evaluation of the latest pharmacological therapy promises for the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia.
