Volunteers are an important building block in caring for people with dementia and relieving the burden on family caregivers. Due to demographic change, altered family structures, and the increasing number of dementia cases, promoting volunteer engagement in the field of dementia has increasingly come into political focus. Furthermore, researchers are also increasingly examining whether volunteering has a positive impact on the cognitive abilities of volunteers.
In the webinar „Volunteering and Dementia,“ the digiDEM Bavaria team examined the topic from two different perspectives. On the one hand, the high relevance of civic engagement in supporting and caring for people with dementia was discussed. On the other hand, two scientific studies were presented that investigate whether volunteer work can positively influence the cognitive abilities of volunteers. Thus, civic engagement could protect volunteers themselves from developing dementia.
