Memory clinics are often a point of contact for people suspected of having dementia. Two scientists from Ireland investigated the experiences of those who received a dementia diagnosis after visiting a memory clinic.
When people with suspected dementia visit a memory clinic, they want to gain certainty. However, there are only a few studies that deal with the personal experiences of people with dementia in a memory clinic, report two scientists from Ireland. They have therefore changed their perspective and focused on researching individual experiences.

Raising awareness of dementia
The results of the review, which analyzed ten studies, „highlighted the need“ to raise awareness of dementia and the role of memory clinics, and to keep those affected informed about the diagnostic process at every stage. This, the authors suggested, could “help alleviate some of the challenging emotions associated with attending a memory clinic.„ Furthermore, the research findings point to the importance of additional communication training for clinicians, especially when delivering diagnostic results for confirmed dementia proves difficult and complex.
Three important topic areas
In their analysis, the researchers identified three themes. „Assessment and Diagnosis: An Emotional Journey“ demonstrated that „a visit to a memory clinic can involve a wide range of emotions.“ Under the title „Assessment: A Relational Experience,“ the importance of the nature and quality of the relationship between doctors and the person concerned was highlighted. Not least, the third theme, „Information: A Variable Experience,“ underscored the importance of information and its timely delivery. The results were published in the journal Age and Aging, one of the leading medical journals.
Tip for practice: Employees in memory clinics should be well-prepared for patients' emotional reactions and build a positive relationship with people with dementia. Furthermore, they should inform patients about the diagnostic steps at appropriate times. Therefore, special communication training for clinicians in memory clinics is recommended.
