When caregiving leads to loneliness

Loneliness and social isolation are important issues for people of advanced age. This is particularly true for those with dementia, which is often still associated with feelings of stigma. But it's not just those affected who can suffer from loneliness. Family caregivers and relatives can also face loneliness and social isolation as part of their caregiving role. Researchers from China have looked at how many family caregivers and relatives are affected and which factors influence this.

The scientists compiled all available studies from 10 scientific databases as part of a so-called systematic review and meta-analysis. A total of 11,134 informal caregivers and relatives from 17 different countries were included.

More than half of caregivers are lonely

50.81% of caregivers and family members reported suffering from loneliness. 37.11% also felt socially isolated. A key factor influencing the occurrence of loneliness and social isolation was the care setting. However, there were also country-specific differences.

Researchers concluded that „policymakers and health care providers should prioritize the development of targeted interventions and support systems to reduce loneliness and social isolation in this vulnerable population.“

Tip for practice: If you are suffering from loneliness or social isolation, seek professional help. There are a variety of different support services available that can provide relief within the scope of care.
