Finger weg von hochverarbeiteten Lebensmitteln

Hands off ultra-processed foods

Approximately 35 percent of dementia cases are attributable to modifiable risk factors such as diet. Researchers from Great Britain are linking the consumption of large quantities of industrially produced and highly processed foods to the development of dementia.

Ready meals or sugary drinks: Reaching for them on the shelf is often tempting because these industrially produced and highly processed foods are meant to promise quick and convenient „enjoyment.“ The nutritional profile of highly processed foods (ultra-processed foods, UPFs) is poor, and their energy density is high. Studies have long reported on the links between dietary quality and dementia. Researchers from Great Britain have set themselves the goal of systematically evaluating the connection between UPF consumption and dementia prevalence.

More than 867,000 study participants

The scientists drew on a considerable number of over 867,000 people from Asia, the USA, and Europe who participated in ten so-called observational studies. After analyzing the data, the researchers arrived at the following conclusion: A high daily consumption of UPF was associated with an increased risk of dementias of all causes, whereas a more moderate intake of UPF was not.

Many influencing factors

The researchers suspect that the relationship between UPF and dementia is „probably“ influenced by many factors. Furthermore, various mechanisms play a role, such as cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., high blood pressure), obesity, and harmful chemical additives, which together can alter the microbial diversity of the gut.

„Finally, artificial additives in food as well as in artificially sweetened beverages can accelerate cognitive decline,“ the study states, among other things. „The effects of this UPF consumption on health and disease are often characterized by end-organ damage. In addition to the liver, heart, and kidneys, the brain also appears to be a target for such organ damage.“

„Combating the societal burden of dementia“

The researchers are speaking clearly about the implications of the study results. „Our findings underscore the role of UPF consumption in the development of dementia.“ And further: „To optimize brain health in old age, we need to consider strategies to reduce global UPF consumption.“ „Coordinated global and national health policies and clinical guidelines“ are needed to replace UPF consumption „with fresh, minimally processed, and affordable foods, thereby combating the societal burden of dementia.“

Tip for practiceNutrition is an important component of dementia prevention. Pay attention to this when you shop and reach for fresh foods one more time instead of a convenience product.
