Many people with dementia are cared for at home in their familiar surroundings. However, for family caregivers, this means an increased caregiving burden. For example, door thresholds can suddenly become dangerous tripping hazards for people with dementia, or pictures on the wall can intensify the disorientation of those affected.
digiDEM Bayern aims to relieve caregivers and relatives, present measures for their own protection, and contribute to the safety of those being cared for. Therefore, we are cooperating with the Unfallkasse Nordrhein-Westfalen (Accident Insurance Fund of North Rhine-Westphalia) and are happy to make their free online platform „Sicheres Pflegen zu Hause“ (Safe Care at Home) available. Use our new digital offering, which serves as a practical guide for the everyday lives of people with dementia and their caregivers.
Most people want to live at home for as long as possible, even when their need for help increases and they become dependent on care. Home adaptation measures can make life at home easier and safer for caregivers and those needing care, and promote independence. In principle, it is advisable to adapt the living space to a person's changing needs early on. Often, only minor changes or the use of aids are necessary. However, sometimes larger structural measures are required.

In the „Safe Home Care“ portal, the Unfallkasse NRW has developed a virtual house that provides information on hazards and protective measures related to the activities of a caregiver and structural and technical measures in the home environment. The focus here is on the family caregiver and maintaining their health. Therefore, it also addresses the external and internal factors that can affect family caregivers during home care and support, and thus also lead to health risks or accidents. The content is presented in the form of a virtual house in which users can move through different rooms. The relevant information can be accessed and printed there.
Dementia topic area

Caring for a person with dementia presents a special challenge for the caregiver. In addition to the „usual“ household and caregiving responsibilities, the emotional burden is particularly high. Caregivers say goodbye to their loved one, as they once were, in small steps every day. Changing one's perspective and accepting the person as they are requires strength, confidence, and new frameworks.
In addition, it addresses external and internal factors that burden caregivers. Even small changes in the living environment and/or your behavior can make caregiving and support easier and prevent accidents.

Look around the interactive „at home“ section. Among other things, you'll find a before-and-after view where you can immediately see how rooms become safer (often with little effort).
Practical, interactive, and flexible
The „Safe Home Care“ portal offers practical, interactive, and flexible support for home care. It is based on current scientific sources, thus ensuring the highest quality and reliability. The development also incorporated the prior knowledge and experience of experts from various seminars, who are both consultants and caregivers or relatives. Nurses and caregivers or relatives benefit from clear instructions that can be applied directly in everyday life. The interactive platform promotes active learning and allows for individual adaptation to specific care needs.
